I do this for other people for a living, but I'm not going to put myself out of business by giving all my secrets away......

The first question is 'who do you want to find?' Followed closely by 'how old were they when you knew them?', 'where did they live when you knew them?', 'what are/were their parent's names?', 'do they have any siblings?', 'were they married when you knew them?'

A good tip is to gather as much information as you can about the person you want to find - almost no info is of no value (unless it's plain wrong). That would include all information about their family/spouse/children/parents/siblings/job/hobbies/... the list goes on and on.

Separate that information into reliable/less reliable and then check birth/death/marriage registers, always cross referencing any information with new stuff you find. Once you've sorted out if the person is married (possible name change), you will have a name to go after. Having two names (husband and wife) will make it much easier.

The last step is to check for known names - there are a variety of companies who will charge you to do this, and some aren't worth the money you will pay them. Some aren't bad but none of them are perfect. Remember, you may have to find several people before you can find the person you want to find.

Unfortunately, some people cannot be found at all. My best friend, for example, is invisible to all checks that are available outside of government. He just doesn't show up on credit scores, voters list, etc. Best of luck with your search. :)

I found quite few old school friends and my mum found her sister using facebook.
Make an account and search for that persons name. You may have a few hundred results to search through, but if he/she has an account and a picture you should find him/her quite quickly.
