The bikini as we know it was named after the Bikini Atoll, site of a nuclear weapon test called Operation Crossroads on July 1 1946. When was it originally invented..? well... "Two-piece garments worn by women for athletic purposes have been observed on Greek urns and paintings, dated as early as 1400 BC and ancient artwork dating back to the Diocletian period (286-305 AD) in Villa Romana del Casale outside the town of Piazza Armerina, Sicily also depict women in garments resembling modern-day bikinis" (source - Wikipedia)
