No, they can tell I'm from the north (UK), but not pin it down to a place. I think its because I pick up other peoples accents

Being from the NJ/NY area, at times my accent is detectable. My bf says I say "kawfee" instead of "coffee". HE'S the one with the accent! Not me!

People from Spain, where I live, can tell that I'm British. I'm sure Americans and Australians could tell that, as well. My wife is from a different part of the country and I've picked up bits of her accent. Also I have lived in so many parts of England that I have picked up bits of each area, so I think the best that most people could come up with is that I'm from somewhere "Up North".

Yes, and when I moved I acquire the accent of the area and sometimes don't even notice it, until my friends tell and kid me about it. There are different accents in the different regions of Texas.

I am certain that if I went somewhere outside of America most could guess me as American.

In the States nobody guesses it. I have a very neutral Californian accent, not the valley accent or any well known Californian accent and had some training in speech classes.

When I am intoxicated I have this neutral accent dipped in a "55 gallon drum" of Romanian Gypsy. I picked that up from my father.

    Most people just think "slavic."

Most people can tell I'm American by my accent. Americans can tell I'm a Latina, but not from my accent, but because I look Latina.

If I'm in England people can hear very easily that I'm from "The North". The funny thing is I only lived there for a couple of years when little - but my parents were from Leeds - We moved around a lot so I'd pick up and loose accents a bit! But the older I get the more the Northern accent seems to surface.

    ABSOLUTELY!

While in the military, on a basic training post, a friend and I thought it interesting to guess the origins of the new recruits. We perfected our "craft" so well that we would ALWAYS guess the State that the individual was from. After a while, we were able to isolate a dialect to within 100 miles ... unless the individual had moved from one State to another.

It was a fun game that I still practice from time to time. Unfortunately, without a steady flow of people from all over the country to use as baselines, it is virtually impossible to maintain.

At home in the UK people usually can, or at least tell which end of the country I'm from. Foreigners can tell I'm English, but most of them (especially Americans) think that all Englishmen are from London; I'm from Manchester.

"Alright, I'm from Wolverhampton, I've got a Black Country accent, I live in the States now with my girlfriend, my Black Country accent is wearing off now though, you can still notice it if you've got a trained ear, I'm not a Brummie though, I'm a Yam-Yam Wolvo boy through and through, come on you Wanderers!"

That's the Black Country way of saying it, then that's the real way of saying it hehe
Black Country (Wolvo, Walsall, Willenhall, Dudley, West Bromwich, Cannock etc) is different from Brummies (Birmingham) accents :)

Other than I'm American and Middle Class that is as close as most people come. People from my own region have trouble knowing conclusively. Only Southerners with a fine tuned ear can tell but it usually because of a particular phrase I may say.

    No not really.
I was born in Urugay and came to America when I was 11.
So my accent is not bad but you can still hear an accent. Is not a Spanish accent. I dunno some people say I talk like a white girl since most people from NYC that are Spanish have that Rosie Perez accent. But I was raised on Long island so that is why I talk the way I talk ;0P

I've lived in the deep south my entire life, but have only a faint accent.
Funny because my grandparents say things like "mater" for tomato, "tater" for potato "okrie" for okra and "Co Coler" instead of Coke Cola.
Locals that have tried to place my accent, usually guess California.
Only when I've traveled (Boston, Alaska, Vancouver) did anyone realize that I was southern, . . . but they always guess "Texas".

Usually....I'm a New Yorker with a normal accent (not like the bad, affected accents of CSI NY - gag) but in the South, people can always tell I'm from the North, most times they guess New York correctly.
