I often wonder the same thing. I would assume that the whitening is caused by either harsher abrasives, or a chemical bleaching agent. Either of which must wear down you enamel at a faster degree.

I did use a strong whitening toothpaste in the past that caused gum pain, reddening, and sensitivity. My teeth looked good, but they really hurt. I wonder if continuing the product and others like it would have caused gum recession?

Yes, also the synthetic "fluoride" they added is also bad. It's not the same as the natural fluoride this is good for you. Calcium Fluoride. The fluoride added to tooth paste and tap water comes from one source. "Aluminum manufacturing plants. The byproduct used to make aluminum is given or sold to toothpaste companies and tap water companies. Most of the fluoride in tap water are dumped into the ocean.
