There's not much to 'teach' really. It's like trying to 'teach' the alphabet the first time you learn it. You don't learn it, you just memorize the letters. Flashcards, repetition and rote memorization (read them, study them, practice from memory, and repeat). Kids sometimes have trouble at first, but if they can memorize the alphabet and then read, they'll grasp the multiplication tables eventually. Practice makes perfect. Give lots of homework, they'll hate you for it now, but thank you later when they have to memorize the inverse derivative and integration formulas in calculus.

I want to point out that when I first read this, I thought it was asking for ways to teach swans the ten times table. Then I laughed. Then I read it again. Here we are. Anyway, it's just about the memorising thing. Going over it and over it. I used to have a big poster thing that had all the times tables on it. In primary school there used to be...songs. Yes. That helped. Games. The usual numbery stuff.

I only know a trick for the nines. Hold both hands in front of you with all of your fingers up (yes, thumbs too). Whatever number you are multiplying by, put that finger down. The number of fingers to the left of the downed one is the tens place, and the number to the right is the ones place. For instance: (9)(3) Put down the middle finger of your left hand. There are two fingers to the left, and seven fingers to the right. That gives 27, which is the right answer. This works for all of the first ten multiples of nine.

Devise a few mnemonics for each table from 2 to 15. Use phrases which sound like numbers if it helps. For example, for eights I've got: 8 = Eight 16 = Sticks mean 24 = Plenty more 32 = Dirty screws 40 = Naughty 48 = Thought I ate 56 = Pretty slip 64 = Sticky floor 72 = Heavenly shoes 80 = Achy 88 = Tete-a-tete 96 = Mighty kiss 104 = (if I live to be) 104 112 = (dial) 112 120 = Countdown worksheets to keep me quiet for 120 minutes
