What are some good guidelines on what to wear when you're meant to be going out somewhere but don't know how formal/ dressy or casual it will be and don't really have a way to find out?

Here's my solution (this happens to me a lot too). Basic black outfit-can be trousers and top or a dress. That is fairly casual on its own, but you take with you in your purse a "fancier" necklace/earring combo. If I get there and its more formal than my outfit I find simply adding the accessories does the trick.

This is so much easier for men than women, but I'll try to help you. I'm surprised that someone who has your background in fashion is having this problem, though.

I hope you have, in your wardrobe, something that you don't mind trashing too much. You are going to have to be smart, but in a casual kind of way. What is quite chic just now is a loose-fitting top, armless, that is tied around the waist and drops to mid thigh. Worn with loose trousers this would get you past most problems. If it's a formal ball and you need a full-length, then I can't really help you because it's too specific, but I wish you a great night.
