There's of course going to a percentage of a population that doesn't stand array of different things from tying there shoes to how to read. I would say some Americans know it, and some do not.

From what I've seen on TV, they tend to sort of confuse it with sarcasm.

Sometimes there is a joke on a US show, and you think that they do until.... the next line explains the joke indicating that they wouldn't have got it otherwise.

Definately, what should be a chuckle turns into a major ethical debate on morality and correctness! Sheeeeesh!

Well, Alanis Morissette certainly doesn't. But then she's Canadian, and they are MUCH funnier than Americans (Kid's in the Hall, Mike Myers).

I can't say that I've heard that enough to consider it cliche, but yes, for majority of Americans it is totally true.

You know where you see well-crafted irony in American TV? In the ADS. Irony is a tone, often of self-mockery, and it characterizes MANY of the best TV ads. More so, in my opinion, than irony characterizes TV SHOWS.
