  • Hands down, the shepherd. Rottweilers are great dogs, but they're big teddy bears.
  • I'd say German Shepherd for their agility.
  • My first thought is a shepherd. They're much more agile. I've honestly never seen a Rott used for police work, but that doesn't mean they're not out there. I have seen Rotts used as rescue dogs.
  • My personal experience is that rottweilers are great dogs for this type job except that the are not normally as obedient under the same conditions, and it cost more to train them to be. Rottweilers are harder to transfer from handler to handler, where as the german shephard adapts quickly. Also, more rottweilers (reported) turn on their owners than german shephards. Now, my opinion, i think that a rottweiler has a harder time transitioning from guard/attack dog to family dog, where as german shephards are almost all police dogs on duty but big fluffy family dogs when off duty. All police dog handlers i've talked to said they feel safe leaving their dogs with the family while they are out. Military Dogs are different, wouldn't trust them with kids under any condition. Both German Shephards and Rottweilers are awesome dogs, and both can be very gental or very rough. But i think overal the GSD was breed for this type of job from the beggining and the traights are all there for the job. Don't know how well rotweilers are at detecting bombs/drugs. That might have somethign to do with, not sure.
  • German Shapherd/Alsatian....but Belgian Shepherds are great for that area of work, too.
  • German Shepherd!!!!
  • definitely a German Shepherd!
  • German Shepherd
  • IMO, a German Shepherd.
  • German Shepherd for its high working ability, willigness to carry out any task, far more agile than Rottie, and for simple reason of generations and generations of breeding this dogs for community work...but far more agille than GSD is Belgian Malinois, which is slowly staring to be used more than GSD...
