  • Ah this one i have done much research on as I have it. There are THREE types of IBS and each one has their own remedies. The first type gives you diahrrea when you eat the wrong foods, or do anything to stimulate the IBS. This can be helped with diahrrea medicines and eating alot of fiber! The second type gives you constipation. This can be helped with medicines that are on the market specifically for IBS (the ones you see on tv), fiber, water, and other constipation medications. The third type gives you alternating constipation and diahrrea. You cannot take medications for this as they will push you one way or the other, the only way you can help this is to eat alot of fiber, and drink alot of fluids. However, the best way that any doctor will tell you to help it, is to avoid the foods that bother you.
  • If you have problems with diarrhea, try to eat smaller meals. If you do eat sweets or other problem foods, make sure not to eat them on an empty stomache and try not overindulge. When you do overindulge, a little bit of alcohol with your meal might help you avoid the aftermeal rush to the toilet. I've found that one strawberry daquiri helps me make it home without worrying about the nearest toilet. Of course, don't drink and then drive. I've also found that moderate consumption of cheese or caramel calcium chews helps slow things down and harden them up. If you have constipation, avoid the cheese, eat lots of fiber, and drink lots of water. ----------------------------- Taraearth: Well, a lot of people do not believe in drinking alcohol at all - whether it be for health, religious, or other reasons. Many times people tell others to stop drinking because of their own personal beliefs, more than its effectiveness. I can't speak for everyone, but the occasional small drink has changed my life since it settles my stomach (even in amounts too small to make me tipsy). There are also prescription meds such as Lomotil that work well, but they have their own side effects. I have found that taking Lomotil too frequently can make me constipated, and it shouldn't be mixed with alcohol because it can enhance the effects (it knocks me out pretty good if I do). I do still use Lomotil, but if I don't have a pill with me for some reason, or want to drink anyways, the alcohol works just as well and sometimes even better. So, if you don't have any personal beliefs that would stop you from drinking alcohol, I suggest that you at least try it before you criticize it based on someone else's advice.
  • When I was diagnosed with IBS (the diarrhea/cramps variety), my doctor gave me four rules to live by : 1. High fluid intake; 2. High fiber intake; 3. Low fat intake; and 4. No caffeine. The most effective was giving up caffeine ; this incidentally also cured my migraine-like headaches ( they were more like cluster headaches)and my severe menstrual cramps. This change was so immediate that it couldn't be just co-incidental, and the relief has lasted more than ten years. --- I did not add those because my doctor told me to eliminate only those things which were clearly irritating my gut. Those didn't. I had already eliminated stress, and still had IBS. Wheat, etc, would more probably be allergies, not IBS. Besides the question asked for *some home remedies* - I gave *some*.
  • Controlling your diet is the absolute best remedy for IBS. Gentle exercise can also help to ease colon contractions. Try this website: http://www.helpforibs.com/ There are many tips and explanations as far as eating for IBS on the site. There are also message boards with a full recipe index of IBS-safe recipes. Try following this for a few weeks, and you'll immediately see a change for the better. It's hard to cut out some of the bad foods at first, but there are alternatives or some things can just be eaten in smaller doses. One thing that really helps me is having bread with every meal- it provides a fiber base and settles the stomach.
  • I have the kind that is diarrhea when I eat the wrong foods, so I started eating more fiber ofcourse and more fluids and less fat and no caffeine and was still having the occasional"episode" so I started eating yogurt about 1 hour before I go to bed at night. It puts the right bacteria in my colon and I don't have problems with "episodes" anymore!
  • Also try avoiding gluten as a possiblity. - or maybe other allergies. For me - I only eat high fiber in the evening. I can't really say for sure that I've had IBS though - but it nice to just have to go in the morning only.
  • high fibre....high fluid (water is best) fruit...about 1/4 cup of red river cereal a day...have had this for most of my life. Diet is the only way i know of to treat it.
  • Since I was younger my grandmother always gave me a coke and an egg! Sounds gross but it works really well! You first pour a can of coke in a glass (has to be a can for some reason) then you add the egg. You begin to beat the egg at a rapid pace until blended well. You should not let the egg cook in the acid of the coke because it would then not work. Try that out for size and see how it works for you! i still use it til this day!
  • I agree to all the posts..theres actually no cure to IBS...if there is, its mostly palliative. Meaning you just have to treat the symptoms...if the symptom is diarrhea..then anti-diarrheal agents are needed, if its constipation, dietary fibers.. alosetron, tegaserod..usually are the drugs of choice for IBS.
