  • You're supposed to jam your straw in there, leaving about 1" below the bowl. Then stand the assembly up, using the end of the straw as a support. Plug the lower end of the straw with gum, break up a Mento candy into the open end, and then (carefully!) pour a bit of your coke into the upper end of the straw. The coke will react with the Mento crumbs, producing a violent release of carbon dioxide. If a fountain sprays out the top of the straw and lands on the evening gown of a woman across the table, she's yours. If the gum blows out the rear of the straw and soaks your tuxedo, you have to buy a round of drinks. It's an old cruise tradition.
  • Could be a grapefruit spoon.
  • an absinthe spoon?
  • So far none of the answers do it. Can you tell us what you were served at this dinner?
  • I think it may be a relish scoop as those are rather flat and they usually have a notch closer to the handle than the tip of the bowl. Or it could be a cheese scoop, where you can use the notch to sprinkle just a little bit of cheese on your food.
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_sauce_spoon It sounds like a French sauce spoon. The notch allows oil and fat to be drained out of the sauce in the spoon.
  • For everyone: This is very close (thanks Grandma Roses) to the shape - it was just a little fancier and flatter.
