The curious thing about dark matter is that is has mass but doesn't emit light. Empty space doesn't have mass, and ordinary matter emits light depending on its temperature. The mass is inferred from its effect on the rotation and clumping of galaxies. It might turn out to be so-called super-symmetric particles, or possibly other exotic particles predicted by certain models but not yet discovered. Perhaps the LHC, now that it's been switched on, will shed some light on dark matter!
