  • the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. moss (lichen really..) grows facing the north (north face of the tree is more humid (more light)) (depending on where your located).. the end of the handle of the little dipper is the north star.. now from that star to the FLOOR lol is a degree off of the northpole.. so its pointed north (theres other ways to figuring the north star method hrmm) and good luck comes from the south (according the us crazy asians.)
  • For the next couple thousand years, you can tell true north using the north star Polaris, which falls on the line of sight established by the earth's axis of rotation. (In 2100 it will become extremely accurate, within 1/2 a degree). It's pretty good wherever you are and what time of year it is. If, however, the earth's poles switch (which has happened several dozen times in the past, evidenced by observations of ocean floor formations), then you're out of luck. The quick answer would be: without a compass, you should make a compass, and then use it.
  • I live close to the beach, and I know that that is west, so I always know where the beach is wherever I am, and from there I know where the other directions are...
  • The sun rises in the eastern sky. The sun sets in the western sky. This eliminates two possibilities.
  • i make a mental topographic map of where i am, and using the closest streets and intersections i tell which direction is which.
  • I mostly use postion of the sun and time of day. At night I would use stars. At noon the sun is always due south. This link will give you various methods. http://www.compassdude.com/no-compass.shtml
  • Humans have a natural West guidance sense you just need to practice it, you need to set your reference starting point!
  • I look for the glow of the sun and the time of day or I can plant a stick or watch a tree and how the sun moves around it. I can't use the old moss around the tree as that just isn't accurate in humid temperate areas. Moss can grow all around some trees LOL!!!
  • Look at the sun at night (west) or morning (east).
  • If you have a watch, point the hour hand at the sun, and half way between the hour hand and 12 is south, so from there you can work out the rest. It's also reckoned that moss grows on the north side of trees, but I think that's a load of bananas
  • lol i remember a line from "californication" by red hot chili peppers: "the sun may rise in the east at least it settles in a final location" and noon...i'd guess a reference point or street sign, or try to gather by a shadow, i'm usually okay with it, though =)
  • For where I am, clouds travel from the west or southwest so I can guesstimate from that, if there are no sun or stars.
  • There is a compass in my head, my husband says. But there is no trick, I just remember from school. Grade 3 Nature Study. Trees has bigger krone to the South. Ants build their anthills on the southern side from a tree or a stone. Moss is on the northern side of a tree. In the night sky a Polar Star will always face you to the North. And, or course, by sun. I'm sure I forgot something...
  • Two ways... 1) The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. 2) From where I am, I know which way north and south are. Add to THAT #1, and I'm even closer. ;-)
  • track the sun, or look for moss on trees.
  • ask a random tramp
  • A cup of water, a magnet, a leaf and a pin.
