I live in new york state. I found this spider that was at lest an inch and a half on it's web feeding on a fly. It was the biggest spider I've ever seen. Black with almost zebra like tan marks on it's legs. I wouldn't let my boyfriend kill it, help!

Could be a cat-face/monkey-face spider or possibly a banded garden spider.

Check out this page for photos of both of those and see if it looks like one of them.

    And here's a good photo of a cat-face

Sounds like a catface spider to me. They have a large round or squarish abdomen with long spindly legs. They also spin beautiful orb webs. Excellent fly and mosquito eaters. We used to have hundreds of them in our barn back home.

Just had a great experience last night with what I believe is the House Spider. LARGE, zebra legs (goldish and blackish), big crazy web that it had built during the one that that I was gone. Was NOT afraid of me. I found it in the upper corner of my glass sliding door after putting my head through very strong piece of web (glad I am not too afraid of spiders). I live in Livonia, near Rochester and see them often, just not quite that large. Hope this helps!
