Should I insulate my basement ceiling if the basement is unheated, unfinished and has a dirt floor? Will the benifits outweight the costs?

Remember one thing. Heat rises and cold air settles low. SO you need to be keeping your warmer air from escaping. So better attic or ceiling insulation, keeping proper ventilation of course, is your best bet. And be sure everything is sealed well, like around your windows and doors, that your windows are more efficient and your heat source is working properly. Keep the heat you have.

One other thing you might look into which works great, is radiant floor heat. If you could install that in your floor or on your floor, that would rally be efficient:-)

You should probably focus your insulation efforts elsewhere in the house first.

I don't remember the exact figures, but when we had an energy assessment done of our uninsulated house, we were told that only about 10%-15% of the heat transfer occurs through the floor.

The two biggest things that will help are insulating the attic and making sure your windows are as energy-efficient as possible.

    Good luck
