Yes, this has most definitely happened to me. Other times, the real meaning has actually made me like a song that I didn't before. Then, of course, there's the song you think you love and then you look up the lyrics and feel kinda used. :)

I avoid all that stuff, which is why DVD's with all their "info" is lost on me. I don't cut open the drum to see where the noise comes from..I just enjoy the sound. I don't want to have my head filled with all the details of who said what, who meant what, what choices they had and rejected..too much information. I just want to enjoy the product and believe what I want to believe and be left alone. Facts are not always conducive to enjoying something more..facts destroy illusion! :)

Depends. For years, I thought Kate Bush's "Runnin Up That Hill" was about wanting to trade places with a dying friend to end their pain, but according to Mrs. Bush herself, it's about inequality between men and women. I was surprised, but not disappointed.

Oh, and for those who don't know by now, "Every Breath You Take" by The Police is not a love song...it's about stalking someone. Sorry.

Go know thyself is THE RED QUEEN

Im usually pretty good at decyphering lyrics and poetry and the intent in others words. I think that its a kind of un spoken little club where some of us are members from practically birth.

Poets are a kind of breed and we always know one another inherently and can usually figure out one anothers intent through the common language of words.

They are after all, all we've got as a means of expression and a poet simply MUST express, with just as much urgency as they MUST breathe.

    Occasionally.

I was always fond of this song and didn't really think about its 'meaning' much. Then I saw one of those VH1 shows about 'one-hit wonders' where they talked about the onanism (look it up...;-D...) implied by the lyrics.

Thanks, guys! I could have lived without that knowledge...:-P....

Yes, especially if it's say, a love song that always makes you cry, then later you discover it's a sarcastic song meant to be funny.

Yep, its happened to me. I really liked it when Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam was asked what a song meant and he replied that its up to the listener. He didn't want to tell his own meaning.
