There's really not much they can do unless they get more information about you. Most banks will require personal identification information before giving any account info to someone. At our bank, if you called in asking for a balance or to transfer money, you'd need to tell us your social security number, your mother's maiden name and your birthdate. Of course, it's possible to get this info from someone if you searched hard enough, which is why you have to be careful with the rest of that info. You should also check your statement online (assuming your bank offers it) on a regular basis (I check many times a week) to look for strange activity. If you tell your bank quickly enough they can reverse the charge to your account and close it to reopen a new one for you. But honestly, I don't think you have much to worry about. Look at it this way, anytime you write a check to someone, you're account number is right on the front of the check. You're just handing it right over to them, so the banks know that simply having an account number is not sufficient ID to access the account.
I really can't answer how safe it is, but I bet your bank would move chucks of it into another account on an automatic basis.
That would make sure it was safer.

You're reading I receive payments from my clients directly to my savings account, that's why I have given my account number to everyone. Is it safe to save money there as everyone know the account number, or what anyone can do with the account number !
