  • Maybe your resume is not so good. Not in content, but in the way it's written. Maybe you're just not "selling yourself" as well as you could. Do you have anyone who could look it over for you, and give you a critique? Or do a search online for resume help. There's tons of advice lying around.
  • your going from restaurants to office? I did that. You need to know that there are a few departments in offices. The reception desk, the accounting dept, customer service in your bigger companies. What are your skills? Take a class or teach yourself-GO TO A TEMP AGENCY, they are your door way in. If you have any large companies near you getting into the customer service department is good. Where a dress to the temp agency, you are representing them and they want you to look good. Smile alot and be friendly. Call them every week. Good luck
  • Mailing out resumes in a "shotgun" attempt is the least successful way to impress a potential employer. Don't bother applying to a place which isn't advertizing a position. For an advertized position, you need a dynamite resume which highlights your skills relevant to the position NOT a job obituary (everything you've done since leaving school)!...and a customized cover letter for each place where you are applying telling them why you would like to work there....and what attributes you have that will meet their needs for the position advertized. Use every resource available to help you....friends and neighbours all can keep you in mind if they hear of anything where they are working...use employment centres, job finding clubs, headhunters, temp organizations, etc. If you do not have a lot of experience keep upgrading your skills and use the college job boards....take temp positions and get the experience you need. YOU need to "JUmp out of the pike" of resumes received by employers every day! They get sick of reading them...so make yours stand right out. There are excellent books available to help with the resume, cover letter...and interview skills...as well as how to network to get your hand in ahead of the crowd. Browse through a bookstore. A good investment!
