She has many times hinted that he may not survive the series. Since he is the protaganist, he has to survive until at least the final book. I don't know about recently, but when she first started the series, she said he would die in book 7. In fact in every interview I read, she was asked why there would only be 7 books and her response was usually something along the lines of "How do you Harry will be alive after book 7?"
