Sadly enough the police are human and behave as everyone else does. The have the same wants and desires as the rest of us. True some are good and some are bad, just like the rest of us. One advantage they have is they have a badge and a gun and they can over-power a situation by force using their job to support them. Some of them bring on a new type of criminal when the suit goes on and the cold sad truth is they often get away with it.

I think that the increasing militarization of the police force has more to do with it than anything. They like to hire ex-military as they figure that means they have some sort of experience. While this is a valid point, the down side is that military experience breeds an 'us vs. them' viewpoint that is totally unacceptable in a police force. Officers should not view citizens as some sort of hostile enemy force. Yes, I understand that they often deal with people who do commit heinous crimes but that is a poor excuse. In my life I've had the good fortune to know well very many officers and increasingly I see a disconnect between the older generation and the newer ones. The older cops tend to be a bit more mellow and not so hardcore, the younger ones seem to have the supertrooper mentality. Hopefully that will soften with time but I rather doubt it, if anything that attitude seems to harden over time. Another point to consider is that the laws being written these days are disgusting. Anymore the law increasingly has more to do with giving the government leverage on absolutely everyone than with actually curbing real crime. Is it really necessary to so severely punish what is often mere bad behavior? These days a mere stroke of a pen is all that it takes to create a new criminal class, look at how effective the 'War on Drugs' has been, the modern day Prohibition and just as absurd. When they are required to enforce criminal laws, its difficult not to be criminal yourself.
