  • "barely" You could say that there was a more or less unified idea to attain independence from British rule, but even that was a bare majority. There was also a lot of intent to maintain the status quo. I'd say that it wasn't until after the adoption and ratification of the US Constitution that your claim might be accurate. Until that happened there was still talk of independence among the various states.
