my instructor won't let me learn Cantonese until i master Mandarian.
You are right when you say that they sound very different.

Hi 4theyeblind: Same here. I started with learning Mandarin first and am now just starting to learn Cantonese. It fasinates me how the pronounciation, rises and drops in tones and the sound vary so much between these two. All beautiful languages.
Britney2189: I forgot to answer the part of the question as to whether I would go to the country that spoke the language. I would have to say a definate yes. I believe that there is no better way to learn the language of interest than to emmerse yourself in the culture and with the people that speak it. I'm a big time student and book learner but if and when I have the funds to travel and try out what I have learned, I find that it helps immensely.
