I don't think you can generalise about atheists. The only thing they have in common is a lack of a belief in any gods; their morals, intelligence and sensitivity varygreatly from person to person, moreso than in most religions, because there is no set of rules to follow except their own.

Because there is overwhelming evidence that something exists which is to be believed in and they don't like it because it challenges their belief in no god of any kind.

I don't know many sensitive atheists....that is, being sensitive and defensive about their atheism. Those that are sensitive could be so for a number of possibly very personal reasons, so I wouldn't know what the reason is for every individual person. It's not a fact for every atheist, I can tell you that much. You don't see the simile "sensitive as an atheist" used in many literary works.

Now, that's a bit of a generalization, isn't it? Athiests tend not to be clones of each other, just like anyone else. We're people, too, although we got there by a different and somewhat longer route. Personally, I know I can be sensitive about some things pertaining to religion, but that's just because I grew up surrounded by unkind Chritians and frankly I have only so much patience when it comes to what can only be called a polite and socially sanctioned form of discrimination. Hurts my feelings, you could say. Once burned, twice shy, is the phrase I'm looking for.
