Writers write. If you do it a lot. You are a "real" writer. My mother was a writer. She didn't write books, but she had several articles published as well as poetry. She didn't make a living at it, but she was still a "real" writer. I'm not giving you my opinion here, but the opinions of several "real" writers I have personally met, along with several school teachers, and professors. If you have a passion for writing, and you write a lot, you are a real writer.

If what you really want to know is if you can make a living at it, well, if you are a real writer, yes you can. It's not easy, and it takes a lot of determination, and you will have to stave off a TON of rejection. If you are determined, and can develop the tenacity it takes to be a professional, you will have to learn to reject the rejection. There are a ton of people right now making a living at writing who are frankly, not very good writers. I've seen quite a few who made it big (money-wise) and can't put a proper sentence together, or even spell well. If you can formulate an idea, and put it on paper (or computer) in a manner that is undersandable to most people that read it, you can make a living at it, if you have something people want to buy. How to find your market, and get your material to them is another question altogether. Since I am often accused (rightly so) of long answers, I'm going to leave you with this.

If you write, you are a real writer. Nevermind negative feed back. Look for positive feedback. It's out there, just keep looking and you'll find it. And write.

If you write even when: you're tired, or not in the mood, or your favorite TV show is on, or your best friend wants to chat on the phone, or it's perfect {insert outdoor hobby here} weather outside...and so on. When you can't (or don't want to) NOT write, even when there's an excuse for it, then you're a writer.

A real writer writes for himself or herself, what makes that writer happy.

The question on whether a person is a good writer depends on otherwise. This is not about what makes a "good" writer.

Not sure there are any. If you love it? If you feel compelled to do it? If your sanity depends on it? Surest sign - you write. Whether it is published is immaterial.

I am a real writer and had a novel published last year. Real writers are those who MUST write. There does not seem to be a concious choice involved, as it forms part of who they are. Real writers are restless unless they write. Writing completes and satisfies them.

You might feel happy when you write. You might have good ideas and you just can't keep them in your head. You have to put it on paper. That's basically it, you don't absolutely have to be a good one at first but as you write more, you will improve. Practice makes almost perfect (there is not perfect).

    Owning a "favorite" rejection letter.

Mine is from George Plimpton, encouraging me to keep trying.

My husband's is from a small publication. It has a picture of a noose on it, like he deserves to lose his life for scrawling this crap. Lol.

When you feel compelled to write.
When you are more relieved if someone hates your character(s) than if they are bored.
When you edit voluntarily even if you really despise editing.
When you let people read your work and they tell you they like it without prompting.
When you let people read your work and they know suggestions will be duly considered instead of hurting your feelings.
When you are better at expressing yourself in the written word than verbally.
Well, really, it's all subjective, you know.
