Quayle was known for his many blunders and foot-in-the-mouth comments. This is a completely different situation.

Actually, the character Murphy Brown was married when she became pregnant; the child's father was her estranged husband. She chose not to reconcile with him just because of the pregnancy. It was her determination to raise the child alone, without a father in the house, that drew the criticism from the then-VP.

no, Murphy was a grown woman who had no intention of marrying, Quayle took it as lack of family values or lack of nedding men values....Sarahs daughter got preg unintentionaly we assume, but is planning on marrying and is still dependant of her family--therefore they are pushing family values.

Lots has changed within the Republican party and in this country in the past 16 years. Lots more than just whether the Republicans can embrace a pregnant teen or condemn her for doing what they themselves have been doing for eons. One pregnant teenager seems to pale in comparison to the multitudes of dead in the Middle East in a war that war-mongers seem intent on continuing indefinitely.

The Republicans seem to prefer that families have these "mistakes" ("But I didn't mean to get pregnant! He tricked me!"), than an independent woman do it. It's seemed to be established. Thant may be the change. ;-)
