When I removed an old, broken AAA battery, I saw dust from the inside of it. What would happen if I breathed in that dust?

Hi I have a Digital notetaker which runs on one 1.5vdc AAA battery. It runs for about 8 hours on a single battery. Can I get it to run off say a 9vdc battery that might make it run for 16 or more hours.

Check with Radio Shack for a holder and supplies. As long as you're doing it, you might try to get the holder for a single C-cell or D-cell battery. They have a lot more capacity than a couple of AAA cells.
For both of these schemes, I would recommend you find someone who knows about wiring and soldering.
If your notetaker has an external power socket, then I would advise you to get a plug and cable that you'd attach to the battery holder.
If there is no socket, you'd have to open the battery compartment and either solder or use alligator clips to attach the cable from the external battery.
It's important that you get the polarities right. Otherwise, your device will probably be destroyed.
