  • The concept of "school" is as old as mankind itself. But it wasn't until around the 9th century Islamic culture was a more favorable setting for science than Christian Europe or the far east. Links formed between science and the Islamic religion readily as Muslims were the first to provide state patronage and finance for those studying science. Also, funds were setup to maintain these scholars regardless of their race, religion and background. Whereas in the West, education and schooling was only for the aristocracy and wealthy. In the East it was for anyone who could demonstrate their ability. Thus, you could say the Arabs/Turks invented the concept of the modern school.
