Galvanized metal is dipped in hot zinc to protect it from the weather. Paint doesn't normally adhere to zinc. To have any real success, you would have to sand the trailer with fine wet/dry sandpaper dipped in mineral spirits, allow the metal to dry, and then prime the surface with a suitable primer. If you do this in your yard, make sure you protect the grass with a tarp or newspaper or you risk damaging your lawn. Also, wear appropriate protective clothing including eye protection and a respirator mask (not just a dust mask) to protect yourself from the chemicals and any zinc dust.

You have already made an investment you want to last for many years. Do it right. Clean well with soap and water to get rid of mud, grease, leaves and other debris that has caked on the sides over the years. Apply a solvent, such as a lacquer thinner, and use a rag to remove any gas or oil not removed by the soap and water. It's important to remove this film that would prevent paint from sticking. Sand your trailer to scuff the paint for better adhesion, using an 80- to 100-grit paper. Take off any loose flakes, because you'll need to get into a solid coat for the primer to adhere properly. Apply primer.
