  • I think it depends on which side you ask. Suicide is a very personal act, where martyrdom is usually for what is perceived as the benefit of others or the greater good.
  • Suicide is death by your own hand. Martydom is achieved by one who dies for a cause at the hands of others. There have been instances lately where some have thought they could become martyrs by committing suicide and taking as many others as possible along with them. These are not martyrs...they are nuts.
  • Martyrs know that they are putting themselves into a situation with inevitable death, right? Are troops that have died in combat martyrs? If I pushed someone from being crushed by a car if I knew that I would die in doing so - is that suicide? Take something lighter - We call it suicide when we take a huge risk (personal or good intent) in our jobs and relationships because the worse case senario is termination. "Suicide" hyperbolizes that "termination" to actual death.
  • Martyrdom is just a glorified form of suicide. And sometimes in the right light it just suicide caught on tape.
  • Because no one in their right mind would consider suicide....
  • Suicide is always a choice, martyrdom is not always a choice.
  • People who commit suicide want to die, martyrs are willing to die....big difference.
  • A religious martyer is supposed to be someone who dies WITHOUT using violence against thier attackers or executioner... Islamic martyerdom is suicide in western eyes but in Arabian eyes its a religious political statement...
