What are the necessary steps and methods that I personally can take to prevent my Web site from being intruded upon by hackers?

    Its hard to give a perfect answer here without more information. What kind of setup are you using etc... OS, ISP, etc...

    Production web sites might need extra steps. If you're using some type of shared hosting ISP, then I'm sure they have IDS (Intrusion Detection Systems) and anti-rootkit up and running.

    The only thing they can't really control are the possible web scripts (Perl, PHP, ASP, etc..) you upload to your server.

    I'd ask your ISP what security measures they are taking and always make sure that whatever code your use is safe via updates.

    Keep an eye on SecurityFocus website if you're really hardcore.

    Try this - www.mcafee.com/ - I have this on my computer it's cheap and it notifies you if someone is accessing your computer our if your software is trying to access the internet.
