How much sleep do you need to function well the next day? If you don't get that much sleep, how does the lack of sleep manifest itself (physically, emotionally, or otherwise)? Please give your age or what decade you are in (teens, 20's, 30's etc.)

For best results I need 7-8 hours. On those rare nights when I toss and turn, I go around in a fog the next day, my reaction time is noticeably slower and I am more prone to errors at work. I can't think of the word I want to use and sometimes I'm crabby too. I am in my early 50s.

Teenager, and I get around 5 hours a night if I am lucky, perhaps 4, and function okayish. My lack of sleep the majority of the time is a major factor in my emotions, because when I am tired I am upset, saddened and irritated so easily it's untrue

I'm in my late teens, and I need abut 12 to 14 hours, if I have less than 10 hours, I can't function well at all.
Needless to say, I hardly ever get that much, and generally sleep for about 5-8 hours a night, and sometimes have short naps during the day if I can squeeze them in.

When I don't have enough sleep, I find it difficult to concentrate, especially for long periods, I get cross easily, I give monosyllabic replies to people.
If I'm very, very tired, I become really chatty and hyper.

i need about 12 hours, but very very rarely get that amount (causing me to take time off school pretty often due to being so overtired) This started when I had glandular fever (i slept for about 3 weeks solid, and havn't still fully recovered) If I get less then this (as i usually do) I feel irritable, grumpy, tearful, and unable to concentrate fully, if this carries on for more than a few days i eventually just have to stop. I usually get about 8-10 hours a night, in which case i need a sleep when i get home (usually about 2 hours lol) Not suprisingly, i do get behind in my work.

I went through a phase where I got max 4 hours of sleep a night, i would very often see the sun rise bfore i fell asleep. This made my dpression much much worse (which in turn made my sleeping worse) I cried most of every day, couldn't concentrate, and generally just found life hard.

    I'm 17!

I need about 8 hours. If I sleep less I am punchy, if I sleep more I am sleepy. If I go for a long period of time without a decent amount of sleep I tend to zone out a lot and I can't focus on things for very long. I even catch myself "microsleeping" while driving, which can't be good! Phisically I don't feel like doing much of anything and emotionally I get sensitive and cranky.

    I am a 32 yar old female.

I need minimum 5 hours to feel okay. If I didn't have insomnia I'd probably be able to sleep all day. When I'm sick I have to be almost constantly sleeping. I'll still be awake after an hour-4 hours of sleep but i'll be barely functional. My whole week I've been sleeping badly, averaging 2-3 hours and so far i've snapped at people, almost cried, spoken a lot of nonsense, continutally lost my train of thought, and thrown up from exhaustion a few times. Hopefully I'll find a way to at least get my 5 hours.

I'm 26....I need at least 8 hours of sleep to function. 9 or 10 does me even better. When I get any less than that, I'm cranky, and sleepy, and sometimes even have a hard time keeping my eyes open at my desk. All I will think about all day is going home and sleeping. I get upset easier, and am overly emotional.

    24 . . .

    8 to 10 hours - I feel lazy
6 - 8 hours - Seems to be about right. Doesn't make me overly tired or overly lazy.
4-6 hours ability to function without fatigue the next day is diminished. General lack of energy. Driving is still ok though as is higher levels of thinking. Temper level is increased.
1-3 Hours, Only happens when awaken from a deep sleep. Almost never of my own choice

incapable of functioning without close supervision. Decision making capabilities deminished. Behavior erratic and uncharictaristic. You may not want to let me drive or add. Highly compairable to sleepwalking. Hallucinations very likely.

Once stared at some very close friends and asked them who they where. Once attempted to go to class at 3 am in the morning. Also attempted to look up the phone number for a prison in new mexico in the phone book. (I live in Indiana)

Teen- recently I've been reading about dreams for fun because I find them really interesting. Not getting enough sleep can sometimes mean not reaching REM sleep (rapid eye movement, if you don't know) which happens at the very deepest part of sleep. Most theories on dreams are that they are a way for someone to release negative energy that you may have contained during the day. If you don't get enough sleep or do not reach REM sleep you still have that angry or problem in your mind and that is ONE way out of many about how sleep can effect your mood.

Waking up after seven hours leads me to a productive day (waking at 8am). Unfortunately, I choose to sleep ten hours (waking at 11am/12pm), and have very unproductive days. Age: Late-teens. I think the amount changes too depending on if you're in/how much you're in school/how much you work.

i can operate reasonably off 6 hours, i'd much rather have at least 7-8 though, emphasis on at least.

i have however functioned off of 4 hours a night for two weeks straight while working on my thesis to finish my masters degree. it was grueling and i slept for about a day after i was finished.

    Mid-Teens.
I can function relatively well on as little as 5 hours, but once it gets below that I start to get very cranky and once I get below 2 hours I'm in danger of dozing off.

If I don't get enough sleep, it manifests as severe mood swings.

My optimal is 6-8 hours. I prefer 8, but I don't always sleep well. I have apnea, so that effects quality. Idon't always get what I need thouygh - sometimes 4-5 hours. In a pinch, I can make it on 2-3 hours and function well until evening. I am in my 50s. I am no longer much good at all- n ighters though I've pulled a fe in my day.

30 y/o and I need 7-8 hrs. If I do not . .. I get irritable..cranky and unbalanced feeling. Somewhat surreal feeling. Not pleasant.
Once in a while I can go with 5-6 but not repetitively.
I work 7p-7a three nights a week.. the first two nights.. I usually go to bed about noon or 12:30 when I get off work and get up at 7:30 -8pm. The morning following my last night for the week, I can sometimes stay up the entire day but am out by 9p. On the nights I am off it varies but on an average I am asleep by midnight and up by 8-9. I have always been this way and had a hard time back in the school days because by the time I got into what is it.. REM sleep? .. it would be almost time to get up and I was never rested with short hours of sleep. Different chemical level type of thing I think. I was a hyper youngen and it took longer to settle down.
I envy people up at the crack of dawn. Cannot do it but once in a while.
