I just made a reservation from Orlando, FL (MCO) to San Jose, CA (SJC) United has me flying from Orlando to San Francisco (SFO) down to Santa Barbara (SBA) and then up to San Jose (SJC) Can I simply not take the trip to Santa Barbara?

Did you not check out a travel site like canoe.com (there are many like that) for direct flights? Once you have made the reservation, you're probably stuck, or at least your checked luggage is, unless you want to pay penalties.

Uh, no. There isn't going to magically be a plane with a reserved seat for you in SFO that's heading to SJC. That's why there's a connecting flight. If you needed a more direct route, you should have checked alternate dates/times, or called a reservations agent with the airline to see what they could do for you.

Often you can change or cancel within 24 hrs for no cost.As for not taking only a portion of your flight, if this is a round trip ticket and you skip a leg on the outbound portion the remainder of your trip will be canceled. United can take you through Denver to San Jose.

Yes, call the ticket issuer right now and ask them to change it. Santa Barbara airport is only served by odd ball airlines. You will have to pay more for a direct ticket.
