You're reading I am using CA EZ-Antivirus on a PC with Windows XP. Upon scanning, it returned 331 instances of infected files - all by the virus Win32/virut.5127 . A lot of the files are .exe for Task Manager, Registry, etc. How do I restore these critical system files?

Thanks!

Sorry I could not have given you better news. It IS possible that you could replace the files and fix everything, but with over 300 files damaged by a virus that does things that nasty I just would not risk it. Also be careful what you backup, you don't want to install the virus onto the clean machine 8o(

I'm thinking all of the files are quarantined...if I can run Windows fix and just purge everything that could restore it all too. The virus is contained, it's just a matter of getting everything back where it should be.

Try it, it may work! You probably can't make it much worse and it could fix it, if you do make it worse then you can always do the reformat anyway.

Going to give it all the effort I possibly can; unfortunately, the person who this PC belongs to really needs all of the data. That complicates things.
