Recent changes in American law require a Passport now in order to visit our neighbors (Mexico and Canada, not to mention the nearby island nations). What is your opinion with respect to your personal travel or vacation plans to these places?

Now that I finally have my passport it's no big deal. But when we were trying to reserve a trip to the Caribean I didn't have my passport yet so they wouldn't take my reservation. I wasn't too happy at the time but to be honest I appreciate the law trying to crack down on this.

Yeah, I hear you. This is irritating to the extreme for me, as well.

The law is in response to other countries REQUIRING that US Citizens enter their country only by passport.

This is in response to the USA requiring passport requirements for entry by all international countries.

I agree that the rest of the world requires passports for entry. I'm fairly well traveled myself, having spent 20 years in the Navy and covered a fair share of the nations on this planet.
.
However, historically Canada, Mexico, and the island nations off our Eastern coast did not require passports for entry, nor did American citizens require passports to re-enter the States (coming up soon...exceptions for trips to and from U.S. Territories not withstanding). The changes for our neighbors are only very recent and driven by the Dept. of Homeland Security.

It sounds like a good idea. I'm not an American, but the immigration debate seems to ignore the fact that the North exploits Mexico a good deal.

There's a fine line between investment and exploitation, though.

I agree. There has to be profit on both sides, commensurate with their respective economies. I'd have to do specific research for that to be able to say anything more about the subject either way.

Same here, I guess.

It makes sense to me. I use my passport even when I am flying within the US--it seems to make things go smoother.

You're right about the terrorism. It's too bad you let your passport expire. REapplying is a lot more expensive and involved.
Avatar The Chief Aug, 31 2008 at 07:24 AM
Ah, well. It's not like I use it all the time...and the new passport will last me another 10 years.

Yes, you're right.
