  • The ozone layer is a thin layer of ozone gas (O3) in the atmosphere. It reflects a lot of the sun's rays and keeps them from reaching the Earth's surface. This prevents the surface from heating too much and protects the organisms from the dangerous UV rays. Depletion can occur when pollution goes airborne and breaks down the ozone gas. Chlorofluorocarbons were being used as refrigerants and solvents and it was found that they were breaking down the ozone gas. They were banned in most countries and since then, the ozone layer has been healing slowly.
