Just be sure you legally transfer them. it's illegal just slapping them onto another vehicle. Sorry about your car.
As long as the plates are still good and you leagally transfer them to the new vehicle it should be fine. Call your local tag office they can tell you for sure.
If the previous vehicle was registered to you, then yes, you can transfer the plates to a different one.
At least in Missouri.

If the balance of a car loan less than 10% owed, mainly their late fees , is written off to bad debt can they still repo the car

Also, just to add, if you don't turn the tags in, just in case you don't transfer them, in my state, NC, they can still hold you accountable for vehilce tax on the car until you prove you no longer have posession of the car.
