What are the components of a Postmark? Can I tell which post office a letter went through even if it doesn't specify one by name?

A postmark should have the date mailed, and the city, state and ZIP or just the ZIP where the mail was processed. It doesn't necessarily indicate where it was mailed. Smaller towns send their mail to the mail processing center to be cancelled and sorted. It is possible to get a local postmark by asking at the window, but unless you do, you'll probably get the postmark of the processing facility.

I can't imagine a postmark that doesn't specify a town or city name. I think this is true in New Zealand at times, but not elsewhere.
