Help answer this question below.

I have a TOYOTA Corolla DX car of 1997 modelwhich runs on petrol.It generates unusual noises right from starting like diesel engine.It seems to be from inside the engine? It has poor acceleration too though it has automatic transmission.

Sometimes timing is retarded or advanced and will cause premature fuel detonation, which would explain lousy performance and the diesel sound.

Perhaps your using the wrong petrol, or it could be your tappets need adjusting, or your timing is out and it could be your exhaust manafold gasket is leaking. Check all these out!
