  • Jesus was criticizing those who gave to get the admiration or praise of men. In order to make clear contrast with those who gave hoping everyone would know how much he gave, he instructed that no one should be informed how much you give: it is between you and God. I think this is a bit of hyperbole: my right hand does not "know" anything. The point was "when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?passage=matt+6:1-4
  • We discussed this recently in our church, and I have come away with a fuller view of this. Just as we are not to do our righteousness to be seen of men, we're not even to do to to be seen of ourselves. I can violate this command by congratulating myself on what a good boy I was to do that kind thing. Once again, it's not just outward righteousness we're looking for, it's inward. And that comes only by the gracious work of God, and He must have the glory in my spirit and in my words.
  • First off id like to say the first two posting where very true.that said there is more to it. Like the using of the spiritual gifts. This is one to witch I can very closely relate to. Did Christ perform his miracles in front of the masses or in the quiet places. Same with prophesying it should never be to the credit of the person Christ is using but to the glory of god that is one of the large reasons miracles don’t occur very often. The same is to be done with prayer we aren’t meant to make a showing of our prayer it is meant to be a means of man communicating with god not to show how strong our lungs are or how eloquently we speak.
