Question

Help answer this question below.

I have to write an essay about a controversial issue for a scholarship essay. I'm thinking about writing about gay rights, because I feel strongly about it. Do you think this is a good topic for this kind of thing, or is it TOO controversial?

I think it is a great idea, if you can keep a non biased opinion, and an open mind, and show both sides of the debate.

There are a few things that are TOO controversial, but certainly Gay rights aren't too controversial. You might want to be more specific if you really want to go after a single issue instead of all of a subject. For example if you were to talk about abortion, you might want to look at the question of how to determine how many weeks is the cut-off point. So you might want to look at just one issue in Gay rights, like the right to equal benefits at work, the right to recognition of relationship or don't ask/don't tell versus what other countries are doing.

Well if you're writing it on a controversial issue, you want it to be as controversial as possible. It would be a very good topic, but you might want to be more specific than just "gay rights" you could do something like gay marriage, gay couples having kids, something less broad. hope this helps :)

Hm, well this sounds like a good idea! But for scholarships, at least in Germany here, a great tip is to pick something that is less well known. Like instead of some big topic such as gay rights and global warming, try something that not many other people would do (drawing blanks right now lol sorry, i'll come up with something here =), the essay readers tend to get bored of reading the same thing i believe.

  • If the essay is supposed to be about a controversial topic, then why NOT write about gay rights? If this was 25 or more years ago, the time I was in college, it might be considered "too" controversial. My we are STILL having to fight for our rights these days. And now that we have been making progress, the ultra-conservatives are getting more nervous! You may want to focus on some specific rights...like right to marry, or don't ask/don't tell?
I think it's an excellent topic, go for it!
And come back and let us know how you did!

I think MSperfect has a point. It's easier to do that. It is not too controversial. However, make sure that you show your original views in your writing to grab their attention.
