All the ones I wanted to say have been said already, but allow me to emphasize on House on Haunted Hill, the remake. It has some damn freaky imagery in it. >_> Speaking of which, I just remembered an awesome one; An American Haunting. This is a very traditional ghost story, and it has everything; possession, freaky images and wtf material, and a cliché yet tragic and intricately woven plot that wraps everything nice and well in the end. It also helps that this occurs in the nineteenth century. :)

The Innocents" Based on :Turn of the Screw" by Henry James. Its a truly chilling ghost story. The ghostly horror subtly creeps up on you. The other versions can't commit on. Only saw "The Innocents" on TV. The book is quite effectively written.

Carnival of Souls (1962)
-
A Ghost Story. Not a scary movie, instead it's story of existence and the enormity of time.

Poltergeist ('82), Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III; The Haunting (1963); The Haunting of Julia aka Full Circle aka Julia; Half Light (2006); Ghost Story (1981); The Forgotten One; Lady in White (1988); The Uninvited (1944); House on Haunted Hill (1959)~not terror-filled but a lot of atmospheric fun!; Ruby (1977); Sightings: Heartland Ghost (2002) // I absolutely agree with "Carnival of Souls" (1962)!

I recalled several others that might be worthwhile: Wind Chill (2007), Mama (2013), Don't Go to Sleep (1982)
