You will normally see a toolbar button that looks like an underlined U in programs that support underlining, so click on the button just before you type the text you want to be underlined and click it again when you want to switch of underlining. Alternatively select the text with the mouse and then click the button. If you prefer keyboard shortcuts Control + u does the same job. Control + b gives bold and Control + i gives italics.

If you're using Microsoft Word or something similar, there's a tool bar that lets you underline, bolden, italicize. Just click the button and whatever you type after that will have that effect until you click it again. If it's already typed, highlight it, click and unhighlight. Hope this is what you were looking for.

If what ever application your in has the capability to do underlines, you can highlight the word, then ctrl+U. Not all apps let you underline though.
