Why were the heads of the marionettes so disproportionately large?

    The heads had to be large to accomodate the servos for the eyes and the solednoid to operate the mouth. The obvious thing to do would have been to make the bodies larger to match the head, but the bodies were "stock" marionettes so that was out of the question.

    Curiously, ITC Films did find a way to manufacture an operational head in proportion, and it was used in the following series, "Captain Scarlet". The secret was putting the soledniod in the chest instead of the head, and keeping the eyes static; puppeteers just turned the head if the character had to look in another direction. These new puppets were so lifelike that still photos of that show give the impression of real actors!

    ITC was filming its second Thunderbirds movie (Thunderbird 6) at the same time it was producing Captain Scarlet. Using the new technology, ITC made all new marionettes with smaller heads for the Thunderbirds movie, but still not quite of accurate size.
