Been there, done that and it is a pain.
First pull the plugs and align the mark on the crank pully with the top dead center mark on the block with the #1 cylinder at the top of it's compression stroke.
Remove the distributor cap and you should see the rotor pointing to a number 8 stamped on the top edge of the distributor. Do not turn the engine over, this is exactly how it should align up when you put the distributor back in.
The biggest pain is disconnecting the fuel lines at the back of the engine.

take the cap off and mark the location of the rotor on the housing of the distributor and also mark a reference mark on the block or firewall wherever it points to this way when u put it back in it goes in the same way it came out by the way the injectors on a vortec are a pain in the ass good luck buddy ur gonna need it

You're reading I am replacing the intake manifold gasket on a 1996 chevy 5.7 vortec does the distribitor go through the manifold if so what is the procedure for removal and replacement
