  • I agree 100%. I think society will make an issue out of anything that will make news. If someone makes themself out as a victim because someone is making fun of them on a blog or on a social network, they have deeper issue than any internet bully can create.
  • Yes, the kid can leave, but the insults will remain. I used to think that people are just exaggerating on the subject, but after doing some research, and being a victim myself, I feel that it's a subject worth studying. Example (hypothetical): A kid doesn't have a MySpace account. But someone opened an account using his name and his pictures, and that someone wrote on the profile: "Kick me when you see me! I'm ugly and fat and smelly." Then, that someone sends the URL to people who know that kid, especially those who hate that kid. I think that's cyber-bullying, plain and simple. Why do people have to subject others to that kind of thing?
  • because everyone else in the chat room will just bully him later in school.
  • Because it is a problem. Some people hack and wreak havoc by sending viruses that make your computer crash. Other people stalk and harass others online. I live in St. Louis, and in St. Charles county, just outside St. Louis county, and young girl hanged herself after being harassed online. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Story?id=3882520 Some people who suffer from depression, low self-esteem and anxiety issues don't deal with internet bullying as nonchalantly as others can.
  • I think people are hypersensitive these days about many things this being just one example.
  • I actually DON'T think people are exagerating. They're not only talking about chatrooms. Websites like Myspace and Facebook can play a huge role in humiliating a student in front of all of his/her classmates. This can be extremely detrimental to a child's mental well-being
  • First of all, most of the time the person that is cyber bullying the kid knows him. You rarely will see a random stranger pick on a person. This translates over to the school setting. So by leaving the chatroom the victim only saves him/her self a little relief because school is the next day. I am an asb officer at a school and believe me, I have a myspace, facebook, and everything else, this is a big issue and nobody should discount it at all!
  • Every kind of bullying is a problem. Although a kid bullied in a chat room can just leave, they shouldn't have to leave. But that seems to be the majority's solution to the problem. I think bullying is an extension of the kinds of behaviour our society has allowed to flourish over the years. Some people seem to take pleasure or satisfaction in another person's displeasure or discomfort and the total lack of consequence of such an action doesn't prevent anyone from doing it. Some of us have limits to what we'd do to another person, but we all have our weaknesses too. Murder, torture, assault are crimes, but teasing someone is perfectly acceptable, even if it continues unabated for months or years. We now even have TV shows that specialize in making people squirm on camera, like the game show where you are connected to a lie detector and have to tell the truth in front of all your family and friends at the risk of ruining relationships. Our society both openly and secretly relishes the demonstration of power over another person. If our society were ruled by the concept that you should treat everyone you come into contact with the same as you would like to be treated, I think things would be more pleasant. I feel for anyone that is abused, whether it be physically, sexually, emotionally, psychologically or otherwise. And yes... I was bullied as a kid. I just learned to get over the experience. But I also find myself straying from the path in some circumstances. Just my thoughts.
  • I'm a very sensitive person and i mean sensitive. i was bullied as a kid and also sexually abused, so yes i do take things to heart. why because all my life people are said nasty things to me that now i believe them. i get really mad when people say that other people can be too sensitive, yes i am bloody senstive and i sick to death of nasty people.
