Word of the wise, first time for the pet with black nails should be done by either the vet or a groomer, they can show you what you need to see while trimming. I understand what the 'white point' is in the link I provided, some people may confuse it with other stuff inside the claw - and unfortunately for some animals (dogs for certain) they can have a black outer coat to the nail and the interior is all white - even a sliver of a cut reveals white - not close to the vein at all.
