A book I read years ago stated that mankind has no instincts, but culture instead. The implication is that outside of shomehow knowing to nurse on a nipple in the earliest years, humans do not innately know what is safe to eat, how to keep warm, what water is safe, etc.

Gatherer-hunter cultures pass on knowledge of such vital things, so it is not necessary to go through the same trial and error every generation. Survival chances increase under the protection of culture. As a society grows and becomes more complex, the standards of culture grow and become more complex. Needed standards on how to communicate abstract concepts, how to divide labor, how to apply the everyday diplomacy of getting along, and other things become more specific.
