Weather permitting: EVERY New Year's Day, in Philadelphia. PA the L-O-N-G-E-S-T parade in the world takes place: The Mummers Parade! From beginning to end takes about 13 to 15 hours. It's divided into 3 divisions: The Comics, The String Bands and The Fancies. Preparation starts about February of the preceding year. Costumes and floats are designed, built and assembled. Songs are selected. Routines are choreographed and rehearsed. It's a very long, very exciting parade! Children as young as 3 or 4 years old begin "the march up Broad Street". Some folks are in their 80's. Not only do they march, they dance and do various routines. Hundreds of thousands of folks line the parade route! The temperature can be as cold as in the single digits F. or as warm as in the 50's or 60's F. Rain, or high winds are the only things which delay or postpone the parade. Thanks for asking your Q!
