If I pay for an MP3, is it then legal for me to upload it to both my wife's and my own iPod?

    Legal - maybe (it depends on where you live). Possible - not in every case.

    DRM (Digital Rights Management) makes it possible for the folks who distribute music in electronic form to place limitations on those files and how they can be used. For example, DRM in an mp3 can make it so that you can only copy the file (using their managing software) to a limited number of devices or computers or discs. You could theoretically break the DRM thereby removing any limitations, but that would contravene certain laws (such as the DMCA in the US).

    Be that as it may, if you bought music from someone, you probably had to agree to some sort of EULA, which legally binds you to their terms if you download the music. So even if it's legal to do all the things I've mentioned so far, by agreeing to their terms, you may still be breaking an legal agreement by copying your own music.
