Why do dung beetles push the spherical dung balls around?

    fecal matter is part of the scarab beetles' diet. the reason they roll it into balls to form into underground nests, where the female will lay one of her eggs. when eclosion occurs, (the eggs hatch), the larvae will feed on the dung as their first meal.

    also, i'm not sure if this is widely accepted, but i heard that in tropical forests, they will roll monkey dung into balls up in the trees, and when falling to the ground to build their nest, the ball of dung will help break their fall.
