I actually got mine to quit by getting a small water pistol and shooting it with a stream of water when he started. But that was the only time I would shoot him with it. So I suppose after a while he associated the curtains with getting hit by a stream of water and he didnt like it so he quit.
Cats will get into everything, trust me, I have four! You can search online and find many methods and some will not agree with mine but here is what we've tried:
1.) Say "No" firmly, and pick him up and move him to the scratching post (none of ours have ever caught on to this).
2.) On our couches we put two-sided tape where they scratch and this has prevented 3 of them from scratching (cats don't like their paws to be sticky) - the other one loves to chew the tape.
3.)Clap your hands loudly and say no. This frightens ours but a few minutes later they seem to be back at whatever they are doing (curtains or otherwise)
4.) Spray them with a spray bottle of water (or compressed air for cleaning computers) but be sure not to get him in the face. This has been the most effective with our cats (the two kittens are still a handful!) but you have to do it consistently. By doing it every time Mackie hits the curtains, he will learn that something bad happens when he runs up them. I have read that this is more effective if the cat doesn't see that the "punishment" is coming from you so that he relates it to the curtains and his action, not you being a meanie!
I had a cat that did that, (Garfield) it was so funny I liked to watch him so put up old curtains I didnt care about and he got it out of his system eventually but if you are not as indulgent as me (or daft) or can't stand the thought of bad drapery the water pistol should do the trick. By the way I have a Westie called Mackie great name
I had two kittens which continually ran up my curtains - what fun when the two of them would do it together and literally swing from them. The water in the spray bottle did the trick, a little spritz every time they attempted it and they soon learned the curtains were a "no no". It didn't have to be a face spray, just a spray of water, in fact they came to fear the spray bottle - so it became a "fix" for the other non-allowable behaviours. Mine had a lovely scratching post, but still preferred my carpet and one side of the chesterfield. Not wanting to have them declawed, the spray bottle worked wonders.
I've started using the water pistol and hope it will work on Mackie ..Thanks for the info ..
